Southwest Transplant Alliance Names Jocelyn Phillips as Director of Education, Culture and DEI

DALLAS, June 23, 2022 – Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA), one of the nation’s leading organ procurement organizations, today announced the promotion of Jocelyn Phillips as its new Director of Education, Culture and DEI.

Philips will lead STA’s work with nationally recognized data firm and culture expert Kanarys. Through extensive research, STA will develop engagement techniques to further create a sense of belonging for its employees and community, in support of its lifesaving mission.

"The lifesaving mission of organ and tissue donation is incredible, but the decision to say ’yes’ to the gift of life starts with education,” said Brad Adams, STA President. “Jocelyn is a valued team member, and I know her industry experience and unwavering passion will help her meaningfully connect with STA’s communities and inspire our team to be the best we can be. I have confidence in STA’s ability to drive real change and opportunity for all communities, especially those in greatest need.”

Today, more than 10,000 Texans are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, with African American and Latino populations representing 67% of those in need. More than two-thirds of those waiting for a lifesaving transplant are people of color, but research shows these communities are less likely to register to donate. This disparity is caused, in part, by a lack of trust in healthcare providers and the prevalence of myths around donation in multicultural communities.

STA is committed to serving a community of more than 10 million diverse Texans and empowering all people to say “yes” to donation, which starts with equipping STA’s more than 300 employees with effective education, training and development programs. Phillips will also collaborate with leadership and partners to share the power of organ and tissue donation with all communities.

Phillips joins STA’s leadership team following eight years at the organization, where she began her career as an organ recovery coordinator.

“I’m honored to be in a position that gives me the platform to create a more equitable world for our organ donation community,” Phillips said. “Both internally and externally, I want people to know that STA is committed to the people, partners and communities we serve.”

Anyone can support STA’s mission of saving lives through organ and tissue donation. There are several ways to register your decision:

  • Online at organ.org/register

  • When you renew your driver’s license or state ID through Texas DPS

  • On the MedID tab of the Health App on your iPhone or iPad

  • Through STA and Donate Life Texas representatives at special events

  • By completing a paper form by mail, available here
