After the death of Brandon Garcia, of 12 years, who shot himself accidentally in the head, his heart travelled to save the life of Arnulfo, six, and to four other people who are alive thanks to Brandon's organs.
"Tell the family of that small one, that they are receiving a heart of gold", said Brandon's father.
October 14, Brandon, the smallest one of four brothers, shot himself accidentally in the head, while his father called him to see a movie and his mother he prepared supper.
After 18 hours of fighting for his life, the Garcias received the news of his brain death. Soon thereafter, a social worker presented the possibility to donate Brandon's organs, still connected to the artificial respirator.
The decision was not easy. The family of Brandon did not want to listen to the representatives of the Alliance of Transplants of the Southwest, and parents and brother insisted that they did not want his body to be opened.
The sister of Brandon, Yvonne, spoke then with the family and caused them to understand that the death of Brandon would not be a total loss, if he saved other lives, told Efe Pam Silvestri, spokesman of the alliance.
After they signed the consent, doctors of the hospital Thomason, in El Paso, were mobilized to seek in the national lists of applicants of organs to the compatible people with type of blood and size of body.
First it was determined that the receiver of the heart would be Arnulfo, son of mother texana and Mexican father, and who would not survive more than one year without a new heart.
Arnulfo became ill in September and no longer could run, was too tired even to walk or to eat, related to Efe Daisy Adorn , mother of the boy, who since October 16 lives with the heart of Brandon.
Sam, 7, received the left kidney of Brandon, since being still in the womb of his mother they had to extract his kidneys due to a congenital illness that impeded the growth of these organs.
Sam has lived receiving dialysis since his birth and now has the hope that finally will have a normal childhood, said Silvestri.
Brandon's right kidney went to a man of 38 years, his liver to a man of 57, and a part of Brandon's intestine to a man of 60 years.
"There are not words to express so much gratitude, that in our son lives the heart of a muchachito so noble and valuable as we know Brandon was", said Adorn.
Yvonne Garcia, of 31 years, and sister of Brandon, says that to think that her brother lives through Arnulfo and of Sam offers a little relief to the great sadness that the family feels.
"We want to think that these children are going to do everything that my brother would have liked to do, as to play soccer, and that they will live the life intensely, like Brandon did".
Silvestri indicated that at present there are at the national level 100,290 people on lists for a life-saving organ, 77,675 of which need a kidney, and of them 13,804 are of Hispanic origin.
In Texas, 8,527 people expect a transplant, 6,439 of which need a kidney and of them 3,198 are Hispanic.
In contrast with national figures, approximately 44 percent of the people in need of a transplant in Texas are Hispanic, assured the spokesman.
Silvestri said that in Texas, and especially in El Paso, the rates of donation are considerably more high than in the remainder of the nation, what reveals that minorities are donating generously.
Our goal is, nevertheless, that minorities donate in rates that reflect its names in the waiting lists, Silvestri maintained.
She assures that thanks to the Garcia family's decision to donate the organs of Brandon, now Arnulfo will be able to live.
Brandon no longer will be able to joke with its brothers, neither to be married, neither to have children, but Arnulfo and Sam yes they will be able to do it, and that offers us consolation, in these moments of great sadness, indicated Garcia. |
