Families of organ donors to be honored

By Diana Washington Valdez / El Paso Times

November 18, 2008

EL PASO - More than 20 families of El Paso organ donors will join with Southwest Transplant Alliance and Thomason Hospital to remember and honor relatives who saved lives through organ and tissue donation.

The families will hang photos of their loved ones on the wall in Thomason's intensive care unit, where they made the choice to donate.

"The hope is that this wall will also help future families in crisis when they are faced with the decision to donate," said Pam Silvestri, spokeswoman for Southwest Transplant Alliance.

Thomason Hospital also will be honored for its continued support of organ donation, and a recent ad campaign in El Paso promoting organ donation.

Silvestri said the alliance is also taking note of Las Palmas opening a kidney transplant program and its partnership with television and the Southwest Transplant Alliance to promote the new Texas Donor Registry, www.donatelifetexas.org.

The Southwest Transplant Alliance says organ donations in Texas account for about 8 percent of the nation's donors:
