National Multicultural donor awareness month

There is a disproportionate need for donation among multicultural communities, specifically Black and Hispanic populations. Observed every August, NMDAM is a movement for us to come together to save and improve the quality of life of communities of color by creating a positive culture around organ donation.

THE FACTS

STORIES oF HOPE:

  • There is an underrepresentation of communities of color on the donor registry.

  • People of color represent 73% of the 10,000 Texans currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Yet, these communities are less likely to register their decision to be a donor. (Source: OPTN)

  • While organ donors and recipients are not matched by race or ethnicity, successful transplants are matched by compatible blood types and tissue markers that are more likely to be found among members of the same ethnicity.

  • Diversity in the registry helps all communities.

TOGETHER, we can all do something to help.
