Advance Practice Clinician

The Advanced Practice Clinician is responsible for the day-to-day activities related to recovering organs for transplant, including but not limited to taking administrative/clinical call, comprehensive donor management, as well as assisting in OR as needed.

Additional responsibilities include directing donor management and advance practice procedures, such as liver biopsy, bronchoscopy, line placement, and additional unlisted procedures at the direction of the CMO to maximize the gift of organ donation. The Advanced Practice Clinician will also be expected to assist in the development and implementation of training materials and competency assessments for organ recovery coordinators and clinical specialists.

 

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • The Advanced Practice Clinician is responsible for Collaborative Partnerships

    • Consult, advise, and coordinate with the Chief Medical Officer, the Clinical Leadership team, and the Education team to create an ongoing effective Clinical team.

    • Participate in and leads case reviews to assess opportunities for improvement as it pertains to clinical donor management of organ donors and research opportunities.

    • Take call as a representative of the Chief Medical Officer to oversee effective donor management of organ donors. Collaboratively guides the clinical team to optimize organ function and maximize organs transplanted per donor.

    • Function as a stand-in for the Chief Medical Officer to external partners when it pertains to donor case reviews, implementation of EMR order sets, and hospital policies.

    • Collaborate with leadership team members to identify, define, and develop data-driven ongoing skills-based training, annual competency programs, and learning objectives for staff.

    • Collaborate with leadership team members to ensure all affected staff demonstrate acceptable levels of competency.

    • Participate in process improvement and data development projects, including case reviews and research opportunities.

  • Education

    • Maintain knowledge of clinical donor management best practices and acts as a consultant in the educational material provided to the clinical team.

    • Effectively and professionally train Organ Recovery Coordinators (ORCs) to advanced-practice procedures, aligned with training plans, such as bronchoscopy, line placement, etc.

    • Lead the oversight of simulation-based training scenarios, and can function in the implementation of sims for clinical staff IP sign-off.

    • In partnership with the Education team and Clinical leadership, develops, periodically evaluates, and delivers the on-going education curriculum used to train Senior and Advanced Practice clinical staff.

    • Proactively identify and recommend improvements to processes and procedures.

    • Maintain knowledge of department quality assurance standards, processes, and procedures, including identifying and correcting errors.

  • Donor Evaluation and Management

    • Provide staff with continuous training and updates on department protocols, policies, and regulatory policies with respect to all aspects of Southwest Transplant Alliance processes, from receiving a referral to finishing a case.

    • Perform moderately complex testing with portable bedside laboratory devices in accordance with CLIA standards of practice including but not limited to echocardiography, bronchoscopy, chest tube insertion, and EKG with interpretation at the direction of the Medical Director.

    • Review documentation in donor charts and work with case specialists and ORCs to develop daily evaluation plan.

    • Functions as a consultant, in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, in the assessment of patient suitability when further clinical insight is required by the clinical leader on call (MOC).

    • Complete hospital medical record review, including history of present illness and past medical history, the presence of past or present malignancies, and all surgical interventions or treatments as needed at donor case start.

    • Participate in active donor team huddles.

    • Act as a resource to clinical specialists and medical director.

  • Work schedules may vary due to work duties and departmental needs. Travel regionally for the purposes of education with frontline staff or external partner meetings is required.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Compliance:

  • OSHA CATEGORY DEFINITION: Category 1 - The incumbent in this position has the potential for occupational exposure.

  • The incumbent will have access to confidential material and is required to use discretion with this information and comply with STA Confidentiality policy.

 

 

Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or biological science or related experience required. Pursuance of nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant degree expected within two years of hire.

  • CPTC certification and a minimum of five (5) years of OPO experience in an organ recovery type clinical role or clinical bedside care is required. Excellent knowledge of OPTN policy required.

  • Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider certifications are required.

 

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Knowledge of simulation, eLearning technologies, MS Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred.

  • Direct experience in a healthcare setting is required

  • Excellent communication skills are required.  Must communicate effectively with all personnel levels and represent the organization publicly.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required.

  • Ability to cope with high levels of stress and able to handle a heavy workload.

  • Ability to travel in light and commercial aircraft or drive his/her personal auto in order to meet all job duties and responsibilities. A current Driver’s license is required.
